Dad stood on the porch when I pulled up. I double checked the time, eight o’clock I wasn’t late. His six foot eight stature plus his bulk already frightened people, but when you added in tattoos that covered his arms and a thick beard, he looked extra scary. The tattoos were actually protective runes, a few of them were also on me.

“Hi, Dad,” I called as I got out and walked up to him, giving him a hug.

He hugged me and drew in a deep breath, scenting me. “What’s that smell?” he asked, his voice deep and soothing, like a river.

“My new friends,” I answered honestly.

“Something I should know?” he asked.

“All you need to know is I’m safe with them,” I told him.

“Rebecca,” he growled.

“I can’t betray them,” I said sharply.

He sighed and squeezed me tighter. “You are my last girl. I can’t lose you.”

“Are they close?” I asked softly, almost whispering.

“Look for yourself,” he told me and stepped back.

Sometimes using my abilities was as natural as breathing, but sometimes I had to focus. I focused and scanned the horizon. There, a few miles out, was a mass of red, evil intent.

“Only a few miles,” I whispered. I hadn’t thought the fight would come so soon. “Will it be tonight?” I asked.

“No, they sent a messenger asking for our surrender. They’ll attack tomorrow,” Dad answered, his eyes glowed in the dark as his wolf rose to the surface.

“What do you want me to do?” I asked.

“You think your new friends can protect you?” he asked.

“I don’t know. I haven’t seen them fight. But, I think so.”

“Tomorrow after school, go with them. Text the address to me. Then, stay safe and hidden.”

“Okay,” I agreed. I was a liability and Dad would be worried about me if I stayed, which would distract him from the fight.

He grabbed my face between his hands and stared into my eyes. “If I don’t make it, go to the safety deposit box. Everything you’ll need is there.”

“Dad,” I growled.

He kissed my forehead and said, “Inside. I need to add another rune to you.”

I obeyed, walking inside the house, through our large living room, down the hallway lined with pictures of me growing up surrounded by wolves, and into the last door on the right, Dad’s den.

The den was concrete with a super thick red rug, a huge oak desk where my dad did all his work, a couch I had taken many naps on, and a side bar stocked with liquor. There was also an emergency drawer inside his desk that was better stocked than some urgent care centers.

“What rune are you giving me today?” I asked him and set my backpack down next to the couch.

“Algiz,” he said.

“Where are we putting it?” I asked.

“Wrist,” he told me.

I nodded and sat on the couch, holding my arm out for him. He took a pen and drew the rune on my arm, having the runes memorized meant he never had to look them up or worry about drawing them correctly.
